Abstract  : This paper aims at studying two practices of translation during the First World War, through the figures of André Gide and Valery Larbaud, both translators for the Éditions de La NRF. Through their correspondences and diaries, translation might seem as a distraction from anxiety which, far from being neutral, is in fact a mean for expressing a true literary patriotism. By focusing on translation when the world conflict weakens the intellectual nation, Gide and Larbaud, without joining the army, have maintained the influence of French literature by increasing the national literary capital, revitalizing the national literary field and illustrating the genius of their own language.

Keywords  : translation, literary patriotism, french classicism, heritage, french language.
